The Future is Green

Global warming has always been the center of major political debates, but are politicians doing anything to prevent it? They blindly promise to reduce pollution but the world is still heating up.

Luckily, there are many who are ready to defend the environment and start advocating for a better future.

What is Global Warming?

A major contributor to global warming, the greenhouse effect, is when the earth’s atmosphere traps heat, causing the earth’s temperature to steadily rise. This is a result of major corporations exploiting their resources and having a large output of carbon emissions.

Human activities such as land deforestation, burning fossil fuels, decomposition of wastes, and extreme industrialization are all direct causes that lead to global warming. Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide and only some harmful gasses that are emitted into the atmosphere due to these actions.

Levels of pollution have never been higher than present-day due to most factories who are not mindful of the environment. Many textile mills dump their wastes straight into nearby bodies of water, which will eventually make its way into someone’s tap water. Soil contamination can occur when many man-made chemicals from urban areas, pesticides, and landfills go unchecked. Even if you are not consuming the soil, being around the particles can have drastic effects.

So as the earth is struggling to compensate for rapid industrialization and a sustainable environment, it is in our hands to make sure things don’t get worse.

 Let’s Talk Green New Deal.

The Green New deal is a 10-year plan to reach 100% clean and renewable energy before it is too late to sustain life. Not only does this deal tackle climate change, it also fights for racial inequality in a cleaner workplace. This proposal was introduced by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Edward Markey and plans to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, limit greenhouse gas emission, and introduce clean energy industries.

The Green New Deal has mostly been democrat lead, so many republicans are against it. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell went as far as to call it a “socialist takeover”. Even though there are traces of socialism in leftist policies, this policy is a last resort to implement a safer and cleaner future. If this polluted economy keeps up, the world will start to overheat, leading to droughts, major heatwaves, and fires.

Notable presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has shown full support, writing, “single greatest opportunity to build a more just and equitable future, but we must act immediately”. Other significant politicians such as Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker have all shown their full support towards this idea, proving there is still hope for a cleaner and safer environment. No matter who is for or against it, the time for change is now.

How can you make a difference?

Leading greener lives can go a long way when multiple people do it. Starting with recycling, using energy-efficient appliances, avoiding fast fashion, and working your way up to solar panels are some ways on how you can directly help. Participating in marches and joining movements to convince politicians for stricter laws about the environment are also efforts that will not go unnoticed.

The earth is deteriorating due to us, but the possibility of a sustainable lifestyle is still there.
