Library To-Go: Making Libraries Covid-Friendly

Beginning early September, Frisco ISD will be implementing a new program to make books more accessible to students during Covid-19 social distancing procedures. “Back in the spring, we had a whole district of students that could only access ebooks, but research has shown that students prefer paper” says Stacey Cameron, the FISD Library Coordinator, “we knew the program was something we had to offer.”

The program, Library To-Go, differs from campus to campus, but is generally the same idea. Students that are participating in virtual classes will have the option to pick up books from their campus library and some campuses are even mobilizing their libraries. The idea came directly from campus librarians, and it was understood that this was a need of their students that needed to be met.

Library To-Go will also have a personalization feature which will assist in a student’s search to find the perfect book. “Personalization was something that high school librarians wanted in order to still have a conversation with students” continues Cameron, “It’s important because not everyone likes the same books, and librarians can tailor to the needs of students.” Librarians will hand-select books for students or even create a book bundle.

This program should encourage students to read more, especially during this time of social distancing. “Everyone is very excited, and we’ve already had a great response.” adds Cameron. For any questions regarding the program, it’s best to contact Jeana Chetty, the MHS campus librarian for more information.
