Scarborough Renaissance Faire Open In Waxahachie

One of the more niche annual activities that pop up each year is the Scarborough Renaissance Faire, located about an hour’s drive away in Waxahachie. It opens during late spring and early summer, this year being open April 10th through May 31st. While somewhat costly, tickets being 30$ for those 13+, 14$ for those 5-12, and free for children 4 and under I would say it’s well worth the expense as it’s a very fun and unique event with lots of varied entertainment.

Due to Covid-19, they have many standard prevention policies taken from CDC guidelines, such as staying within your group, maintaining distance from others, wearing masks unless eating or drinking, distanced dining and performance areas, and sending home any staff who show symptoms. Like other day trip activities such as the zoo, you do want to plan for a cooler, less humid day given Texas weather and make sure to bring sunscreen, but the fairground has plenty of stalls and shops to stop at. According to the official website they have over 200 different shops, ranging from handmade flower crowns, wooden swords or shields, hair braiding, and face painting, clothing and costume shops, and various stores with lots of interesting odds and ends. There are also demonstrations throughout the day from many individual shops. While the main theme is renaissance there are various other fantasy areas, such as a mermaid tank, pirate-themed items, or dragons. Each day there is a parade at 1 p.m. through the fairgrounds, with several small performing stages throughout with all kinds of shows.

Overall the Scarborough Renaissance Fair is one of, in my opinion, the best events in the area, well worth the hour drive for a day trip. While ticket prices and costs inside the faire are somewhat high, many of the shows and demonstrations are free, along with several actors and performers freely wandering the park. If you have any interest in the general renaissance fantasy aesthetic, I can guarantee you’ll have a good time, even if it’s just to find some fancy knick-knacks. This being my fourth year attending, I feel confident giving a very high review.
