MHS’s AVID Program
The AVID program is an opportunity for students to hone in their academic future. AVID stands for “Advancement Via Individual Determination”.
To acknowledge this, AVID is an elective class that has developed many students to receive the academic, social, and emotional support that students will need to help them succeed in their school’s more rigorous courses. In short, it helps them prepare for college or a career plan.
Usually, students who are enrolled in AVID are 20% most like to participate in a 4-year college or university, and the overall AVID college participation rate is around 93%.
As Hellen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together, we can do much.”
AVID is not just helping students to work towards college, but it will also help them open up and communicate with their peers, help each other out, and be connected. There are tutorials where students pick a current subject that they are struggling in. Students are placed with a group towards the same subject, and the meaning towards it is to teach students to learn through the inquiry process and learn how to function in collaborative study groups, and work as a team.
Students will have guidance from an AVID teacher to work through college essays, and applications. It can be something stressful for students who are not sure what to do.
Visiting colleges in high school will advise students to have some sort of idea where to go and apply. AVID helps students to visit college campuses, experience the life in a college and see what the dorms are like, get information towards scholarships and college applications that students will need, and have a chance to communicate with current students in college.
AVID has a lot of great opportunities, and you can start planning your future today.
As Mary Catherine Swanson stated, “The goal of education in America must be for the purpose of teaching all of our students to the very highest levels for lifting up all people.”
